Pvt. Lawrence E. Harris Died in Service, 1918

Lawrence E. Harris was born on 24 May 1896, in Wood County, Ohio. His parents are John E & Della A. (McClintock) Harris. Lawrence was living in Marion, Ohio at the time he entered service.

He entered service on 24 June 1918. Lawrence attended basic training at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio. He was assigned to Company 12, 3rd. Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade until 16 July 1918. Pvt. Lawrence E Harris was then assigned to F Company, 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division “Railsplitters.”

Pvt. Harris then departed New York, on 2 September 1918, aboard the RMS Aquitania. He sailed with the 334th Infantry to Europe to join the American Expeditionary Forces. Unfortunately, he developed lobar pneumonia and died on 19 October 1918, less than four months from entering service.

Pvt. Lawrence E. Harris was buried in a temporary grave on 22 October 1918, in St. Symphorien, Tours, France. On 9 August 1920, his remains were disinterred and prepared for return to the United States. His remains arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, on 11 August 1920, aboard the U. S. A. T. Sherman. His remains then arrived back in Marion County, Ohio, on 25 September 1925. Pvt. Lawrence E. Harris was laid in his final resting place at Fairview Cemetery, LaRue, Marion County, Ohio.

Lawrence E. Harris is remembered on the Honor Roll, at the Veterans Memorial Park, in Marion, Ohio; and on World War One Honor Roll, located on the second floor of the Marion County Courthouse.
